We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate scary movies: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.
An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.
The narrative commences when Millie and Tim move from the big city to the rural area for her career. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.
A Paranormal Spark
While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.
The couple confront the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent undercurrent of doubt about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your other half and state, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform at present.
