The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
