New research indicates that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the injections explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
