Government Official States MoD Looking at Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, with Staff Advised to Refrain from Secret Talk in Vehicles.

An defence minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively examining the possible threats associated with Chinese-made cars, and personnel have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified matters in all vehicles.

Security Guidance for MoD Staff

In a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about secret material while travelling in China-made vehicles.

The minister said that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but noted that safety is a issue in all modern vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a secret classification in any car, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Broader Security Background

This announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and bring disruption to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.

This broader defence environment highlights the significance of strong protocols and caution in every aspects of government operations, including vehicle usage to communication practices.
